Among the many experiments performed by pioneering surgeon and anatomist John Hunter (1728-1793) was this successful transplant of a roster's spur onto it's comb. Encouraged by this, Hunter later tried to implant a human tooth into a rooster's comb, which he mistakenly interpreted as another success.
