About the Artist
Kate Kern Mundie was born 5 April 1974 in Saint Louis, Missouri.
Kate spent her childhood in the Midwest and New England. In 1992, Mundie moved from Boston to
Philadelphia in order to attend the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, where she studied
printmaking and painting. Ms. Mundie graduated from PAFA in 1996, and three years later received
her B.F.A. magna cum laude from the University of Pennsylvania.
Kate Kern Mundie taught first grade for four years at Friends Select School, but now
teaches painting, drawing and printmaking classes at the Samuel S. Fleisher Art Memorial — where she also served as development assistant. Kate Kern Mundie is also involved
her community, having served several artist residencies in public schools and senior centers in Philadelphia.
However, teaching work doesn't quite pay the bills, so Kate recently accepted a job at
Urban Engineers, Inc., where she works as administrative assistant for the highways department and creates
graphics for engineering projects. Kate lives with her husband and fellow artist, James Mundie, in South Philadelphia.
Kate Kern Mundie has spent part of the last several years painting on the outer tip of Cape Cod. As a
result of this experience, Mundie has completed a series of plein air paintings of the Lower
Cape that attempt to convey the jewel-like colors, light and texture of that landscape. Mundie
also travels around the Philadelphia region and the Midwest in search of interesting landscapes on
which to hone her painting skills. When the weather is too cold or inhospitable to paint outdoors,
Mundie turns to still-life subjects or interior scenes.
