Pamet River
oil on paper, 11 x 15 inches, 2002
Private collection
This is the very first landscape I painted on Cape Cod in the summer of 2002. Over the course of two weeks that August
I took a very enjoyable landscape painting class with Rob DuToit in Truro, Massachusetts, where he introduced me
to the Pamet River, harbor and surrounding marsh.
With this painting I learned that I needed a larger variety of
greens in my palette. When I started I had just a tube each of cinnabar green medium and terra verte — and, of course,
various blues and yellows with which to mix greens. That afternoon I went to the hardware store in Provincetown, where
they have a good selection of art supplies, and got a tube of Prussian green and Naples yellow to add to my arsenal.
The Naples yellow allowed me to lighten my greens without them getting too yellow or chalky white.
I have returned many times to this area and painted the river, marsh and harbor from many different vantage
points.
