6th & Passyunk
oil on paper, 11 x 15 inches, 2005
I have often thought of painting this old art deco filling station and repair shop in South Philadelphia;
however, it recently went up for sale and in our booming real estate market it will most likely be torn
down to put up yet another condominium. When I saw the sale signs go up, I knew I had to get off my duff and
get out my paint box. The station is great from every angle, but I chose this view because of
the old rust bucket of a blue car parked beside it. I love the color of the car against the red, white and green of the
station.
The corner of 6th Street and Passyunk Avenue is a very busy intersection with lots of people walking
by. Many people stopped to watch me paint and many of those who live on the street would
periodically check on my progress. As I painted, the comment that I heard most from passersby was
that they had never really noticed the building before, and after seeing the painting they suddenly
saw it for its great architecture and color. For me that is one of the best compliments —
that through my painting they can appreciate the beauty that I see all around me.
