Barred Island No. 1

Monotype in black ink depicting a rocky evergreen-covered island in Maine, connected by a sandbar.

Monotype print in black ink on rag paper, 10 x 11.75 inches (25.40 x 29.85 cm)

This print was loosely inspired by Barred Island in Deer Isle, Maine. The island in Goose Cove off Stinson Point can be reached at the end of a 1.5-mile hike by crossing a sandbar at low tide (hence the name of the island). At high tide, the island is no longer accessible by foot and the water over the sand appears bright turquoise like the Mediterranean Sea; but if one were to take a swim in it, the temperature of the water would quickly end that simile as one retreated shrieking up the beach. Still, it’s a lovely place to stroll and I have visited often. Occasionally, I have arrived by kayak at high tide and had the entire island to myself.
